Anticoagulation Service

Some of our practice nurses and GP’s have undertaken specialist training to provide monitoring of patients on anticoagulant therapy (usually warfarin).The service is provided at the surgery and at home for housebound patients.

Our current service provides instant INR results and dose adjustment by using finger prick testing and hand held analysis.

Asthma Service

Two of our practice nurses offer appointments to review and monitor patients with asthma. This service includes advice on asthma management and education in the use of different inhaler devices.

Appointments can be made by contacting the Uppermill Surgery.

What to expect — and what to bring You will be invited for regular reviews with the asthma nurse, usually every 6 months but if you are struggling to control your asthma you will be asked to come in more often.

The appointment should take about 20 minutes. Your asthma nurse will:

  • ask about your symptoms — you will be asked complete and bring along a form about your symptoms (Asthma Control Test).
  • check your peak flow reading to see how well your lungs are working.
  • check your inhaler technique to make sure you’re getting the correct dose of medicine —please bring along all the inhalers and spacers you currently use.
  • agree a written asthma action plan with you, this is a step by step guide to help you stay on top of your asthma, and spot if your symptoms are getting worse. - If you have a written asthma action plan, please bring this with you
  • record your height if you are on inhaled steroid (once a year)
  • check your vaccination are up to date

If you are experiences any problems in between appointments please contact the practice as soon as possible and do not wait to be invited.

COPD Service

COPD is a respiratory disease almost exclusively linked to smoking, which results in breathlessness and wheezing. This service provides screening for those at risk using spirometry (a breathing test) and advice for those with established disease.

Referral is usually from within the practice but if you feel you have COPD and are not reviewed regularly, contact our Uppermill surgery.

Counselling Service

There are two counsellors based at the practice, and an attached mental health worker currently based at Glodwick Health Centre, who offers cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) .Referral to these services, is through your GP.

Diabetes Service

Our diabetes team arranges regular review appointments, usually with the nurse. This service provides screening for complications, checks on control, initiation of insulin and referral to other services where appropriate.

If you have diabetes and are not having regular reviews, or are currently reviewed at the hospital and are considering switching your review to the practice please contact the Uppermill surgery for an appointment.

Hypertension Service

Our hypertension service provides regular screening to detect raised blood pressure, management of hypertension by both GP’s and practice nurses, and a dedicated nurse-led clinic where patients at greatest risk of vascular disease are managed.

Joint Injection Clinic

Each week we run a clinic for patients requiring injections into joints or soft issues. Appointments will be offered on referral from your GP.

Minor Surgery Clinic

A range of minor operations can now be performed under local anaesthetic at the surgery. Appointments will be offered following referral from your GP. Drs Hartley and Watson run this service.

Vascular Service

This service is nurse led, and provides regular monitoring of patients with a range of long term conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels. Patients with angina, those who have had a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, or blockages of the arteries in the legs will undergo regular checks.

  • Contraception pill review
  • Contraceptive injections review
  • Smear test

Please book an appointment with one of our GP's for:

  • Contraception pill counselling and advice
  • Contraceptive injections counselling and advice
  • Emergency contraception
  • Referrals for termination of pregnancy

You are also welcome to attend Oldham Sexual Health Service who provide the following service:

  • Counselling and advice
  • Contraception (all types)
  • Coil and implant fitting and removal
  • Emergency contraception
  • Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV
  • Express testing
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Referrals for termination of pregnancy
